welcome to 30 techniques of creative writing and other acts of writers magic this manual right there it's 30 pages long it's not a book books tend to be worthy this is not this will show you a technique and show you is fix a specific example of how to apply that technique my name is Ben Thomas and I'm about ready to improve your writing techniques now just so you know who I am I've written six books two of them are here codebreaker and scuba go hold these are young adult books or talk about them later I have 11 national articles and national magazines and recently I have taught creative writing at the University of Maine and Augustus senior college now stay with me keep your hand off the mouse does 30 page manual I promise will improve your writing I've used it in high school classrooms I've used it in the college level and it instantly will change the sound and the fury of any manuscript that you're working on it's ten dollars ten dollars now ten dollars is too much money go away move move your mouse get rid of me but if it's not stay with me well boat ready to show you five of the 30 techniques of writing you get when you order this manual now they're going to scroll on your screen right now and I'm going to over-read it a little bit so you can stay with me the first one is tags when an author uses a tag he or she is giving the reader a visual mental shortcut so the reader can quickly see the character without the author reed ascribing that character for example someone might have a peg leg of your redheaded we call him Carrot Top the bald man the one eyed guy or the gold tooth from code breaker I wrote the lappy uttered with just above ass week and when his mouth opened the silver tooth look doll and dead in the waiting light from the overcast sky leader and code breaker he becomes silver tooth and that's how I used a tag second one your character thinks for another say I'm thought about Blackie he won't rush me at least not right away he wait until I clear the doorway it's too risky for him to attack me in here Black Eagle wait until the moon goes down he'll take his time it's nice about this is that you as the reader get information without the author really telling you anything the third one one event follows another logically the Sun dropped down behind the horizon and you can leave it there that's fine too son drop down behind the horizon but this I think you agree is better the Sun dropped down behind the horizon darkness seemed to follow almost immediately logically from the sun goes down to darkness the wind blew what was the result of the wind wine Becky wiped her hair away from her face she cried boyfriend was they broke up the boyfriend has got all upset because all she cried and cried and cried all night that's ok but if you say she cried and cried cried all night in the morning her pillow is wet that's better the temperature suddenly dropped Jack zipped up his jacket rain pounded on to the streets huddled formed in the gutters one thing Falls another the fourth one had the herald wonder about a future event she would probably look more like a man the woman he thought to himself practical shoes and a face like the stinks then he turned the corner and found himself face to face with a beautiful woman in the last one number five this is my favorite always give the reader a reason to turn the page two bad guys are chasing the heroine the heroine Jack and Jenna on an island they found something on the island that's valuable the bad guys want it they're chasing them across the eye on the shooting and Jack and Jenna have a boat on shore they hope the tide hasn't left at high and dry but it hasn't they jump in the boat when this starts to take place the first bullets whacked into the wood hall with a wet sounding the second nicked the steering wheel cardona was 30 yards away with God are wet aside he could see the strain and effort on his face I gave the key of frantic twist followed by the sound of the starter grinding in my ears I snapped my eyes off the beach Cardona was spent bent over at the waist gasping for breath sucking air he was done got old the skinny guy skinny guy that's a tag okay God Allah skinny guy reached down and took the pistol from his hand popped into a shooting stamps the barrel pointed at my head there was no place to hide I waited for the bullet fire and smoke belts from the pistol a blow like a hammer swatted me to the day Jenna leaped the wheel and to the key Jan the motor won't start end of chapter I think he's going to turn the page we're about halfway through we talked about 30 techniques of creative writing I'd like to speak just a few minutes on other acts of writers magic and this made in for some of you be the most important part how do you use other acts of writers magic well it's like a thesaurus only it's not a word thesaurus it's a freeze thesaurus for example you decided you wanted to un you're writing something and you use the word afraid and you looked enough asaurus you found the word frightened so now you tell me that Sam is frightened well that's not really good because you're telling me Sam is frightened what I want you to do is to show me that saying is right so I went inside here in my manual you could probably see all these lists and lists and lists these are phrases that can describe how a person feels how different body parts function so I picked out of some of my phrases adrenaline coursed through the body nausea sweat my throat went dry Sam's legs buckled feared ride in his mouth now I'm showing the reader I'm not telling him is afraid I'm showing him that it is afraid you wrote in your adventure novel about Sam Sam is being chased by the bad guys they're closed and he's climbing up this cliff as fast as he can so long ways up he gets up there and he reaches over the top pull himself or you wrote Sam laid his hand on the edge of the cliff and pulled himself over doesn't quite cut by using my phrase thesaurus I was able to bring bodily functions in here fatigue physical her how the heart behaves runs under stress how about brush the body is affected now when I rewrote that it sounds like this Sam's thoughts were in a turmoil his hands wet with sweat threatened to slit catapulted him backwards into space Sam's heartfelt squeezed his mouth felt dry with the effort of clinging to the splitter erock muscle title Ong his arm and hands trembled as he reached for the narrow ledge and he felt torn with fatigue Sam lean and exhausted body close against the wet rock the next hand grip was just out of reach he strained and struggled upward and heaved is tortured body over the lip of the cliff and sprawled lengthwise and lay a withering as he flopped over the top of the cliff now that's overdoing it and I did it for emphasis but you get the idea it sounds much better we're getting work showing the Wii or how hired Sam is some of the bodily functions that are that are working against him as he scrambles up the cliff at the end of this little video you go down take a piece of paper and pencil you write down for me the number of ways that a character can move when you're all done i'm going to offer you 75 percent more than you could possibly dream up on bent knee walk with feet spread apart walk straight legged spray this legs feet shuffle fumbled staggered stamps wade fat st. back toil struggles for him thrashed works wasted and so on and on and on my suggestion to you is that you write your story and on the rewrite insert your character into some of these phrases that are in out I also wrote a lot of stuff these two books are young adults a lot of them aimed at teenagers give you some teenage terms that I threw down here you've got a whole bunch of them right here you got to sound like you know what you're doing chill out totally gross creepy weird big deal take a walk he's cute totally cool major stud man give me a break what's your problem totally apologize and the new ones it's out that a lot of you probably don't know is sick my first heard that I thought sick been somebody was in trouble sick beans it's great so catch up you buy the manual you can do that and then we also said that a good character is better than a good plot any day I give you a whole bunch of things on how to build a background for your character so he'll sound decent and look decent and read so that here's a roundness to them and finally when you're creating your characters make them interesting make them graceful athletic warriors freeloaders bullies cruel kind selfish unselfish honest clever timid bold make an aggressive generous theological warped deviant eccentric warm and clumsy and others you don't wait these all down you're going to get in the manual and remember like ourselves they have feelings of love revenge ambition guilt grief regret loss separation hate jealousy joy saw her temptation and innocence and finally the other day I read about an author who wanted to describe something that wasn't very tall he said it was about as tall as hips on a snake I thought that was cool I wrote it down go write a good book go write a good story and start bike wondering 30 techniques of creative writing in other acts of writers magic now I promised you that this manual will make you a better writer it's ten dollars if you find after you get it it
