what what they entail and if they're worth it so for those of you that don't know master class jock spent a lot of time here because most likely you all do that's why you probably Google this video but it's over 45 classes essentially taught by masters or really successful people in each of the industries things like writing filmmaking culinary expertise entertainment lot of different things and each of these courses are again taught by someone who's been highly successful in that industry which is what makes master class intriguing to us and why we wanted to to do a series of reviews on it see how what kind of value they actually offered each less than average is about 20 for each course average is around 20 for lessons so let's let's take a look specifically now into Dan Brown's master class since that is what you guys came here for so here you can see we are locked in right this is our Dan Brown teaches writing thrillers review so let me give you a little bit of an outline of how this works right so Dan Brown's course if we look at the overall sense of it his course is actually made up of 19 lessons almost 4 hours of video content there's a 89 page workbook that goes along you can download the entire workbook which I'll show you here in a second and or you can download the snippets that go along with each lesson as they as they go there's a community hub which comes along with every master class where you can interact with other students ask questions and there's also an office hours features where you can actually submit questions to the teacher dan either via written content or recorded content and there's a chance that if it gets selected he may actually answer it for you so that's an overview of his class but let's go back into the platform here and just show you so here are the 19 lessons as you would see right and when you click on each lesson you can expand it right to this so this chapter one Dan is gonna basically introduce himself as your instructor give me some of the practical takeaways that you would get from the course so if you go into the course here if we go to we'll just show you what wouldn't that courses look like so here each course come to the video content and I'm not gonna play it for you out see because that's their their content they're at master class but you can see the quality of the videos are very strong okay just to give you a sense and welder will be is actually Dan going over the topics in that particular course and there's some interesting you know cutscenes that go along with the thriller theme and the actual video course is laid out in a pretty conversational manner you'll see here once you get into Dan themself talking it's kind of set up in this scenario right here we're Dan it's gonna be like you and Dan Brown are essentially sitting across from each other you know the audio itself the video quality one thing that we said in our overall masterclass review very very high quality as high as you're gonna get in any of these learning platforms so that is really top-notch its top production value to no different here with the Dan Brown course but here essentially you would get a video for each course and he would talk about the the concepts here going over and then there's a supporting workbook right so let's let's just show you here the supporting workbook this is the entire workbook 89 pages you can see here and each of the lessons has the key concepts from the chapter review it has a way for you to learn more a lot of times it'll refer you to some content to read if you haven't read it or some you know some books I'm writing from some of the things he messengers dimensions in the course and then here's the best part about it right guys the writing exercises that you know we were able to kind of go through at the end of each course this is the tangible stuff where you kind of take the lessons that you've learned and read about and now apply it in your own writing so each of this is pretty laid out pretty cool because there's it's laid out where you can do the exercise if you are coming up with a new novel right or if you're already in the middle of writing a novel it kind of will tell you how to take the nollie already written in and and perform the exercise to practice what they preach in the lesson and apply it to your novel so this was really great in terms of making the lessons tangible so you can see here chapter 2 the anatomy of a thriller same thing would come with the video lesson and then obviously the workbook the corresponds and they give you some really cool excerpts here from some of his books which are really great too when he brings certain lesson out and shows you a tangible example this one has from inferno right which is really nice it really brings a lesson to light and pulls it through I felt going through through the lessons so especially being a big Dan Brown fan I may be a little bit biased but if you are Dan Brown fan or fan of his thrillers or a thriller writer I mean this is really gonna help bring these lessons to life so these excerpts from and stories that he uses throughout this course from his books is it's really really useful and really cool so let's go through a little bit of what each course is about so you kind of know what the lessons encompass I'm not gonna show you you know every single video no sound because that I don't think will be very useful but you can picture one of those videos that every single one of the 19 lessons write that go along with the key lessons so at lesson two will point out some of the highlights here right so one of the concepts that Dan talks about in lesson 2 which is anatomy of a thriller is these three C's the contract the crucible in the clock for me that was a really great take away from from writing a thriller and how you create suspense and that is a lot of what this you know this lesson is about is those three C's and how it helps you build the anatomy of a thriller and also another great takeaway and you can code a real rhihub comm check all these notes out we put that in written form for you as well I will link below but a great Segway talks about is how the suspense is essentially all about the promises you create for your reader and how quickly you make those promises and answer those promises follow them by additional promises can really affect the pacing of your thriller found that really really enlightening and thinking back to reading Dan Brown thrillers it really made sense when I really think back to what I liked about them was the constant here's a promise we're gonna answer as much of those questions to be Ken for you we're gonna answer every single promise every single time we're never gonna leave you saying hey wait a minute what happened to that that concept so really really good lesson there this is a cool lesson about finding the idea and so Dan what I really liked here and what we put in our notes from this lesson is Dan really puts the whole old adage to write what you know on its head kind of spins it which is really great he actually talks about how his concept is don't write what you know write what you want to know and he talks about the importance of now at the Internet just using that interest of a concept that you would like to know more about and how in his books a lot of the things he writes about had no concept of but but in that learning process you you develop and find ideas that you can string together into an interesting novel so write the book you would like to read right and that's how he does it really really good lesson here and he talks a lot about finding the driving question behind your novel if you can find the driving question behind your thriller and go back to that driving question then that will help structure the rest of your story and he gives an example from angels and demons in lesson 3 in lesson 4 he talks about choosing locations and how the location itself can not only act as a character but can act to create and generate suspense and it allows it allows you as a writer to add intrigue and wait to what's going on for your readers it'll also give structure to your book which I really found interesting because I thought back to writing some fiction novels and you getting stuck and saying okay you know what where did some of those initial locations that I picked out that I find intriguing that I want to put in the story and how it helps frame the story sometimes and move the plot along so I had never thought about choosing locations and writing quite like that I thought that was pretty useful and pretty different this lesson lesson thought was all about creating heroes and villains and he talks about the importance of having a moral gray area right and how what that makes both your your villains and your heroes intriguing and it can't be just black and white which if you think back to any villain that you really really get into it's true right it's not just like hey they're evil for evils sake he talks about how you know it's important for your heroes not to just be perfect but have strengths and weaknesses but you know I think most writers think about but it's nice to hear someone who's been so successful also reiterate that and he also relates a lot to personal stories of people that he admires in his life and how he builds that into his heroes and how as a reader we really we really identify with the average person and the qualities that we can find in ourselves and that's what you want to accentuate in these in these characters he talks about universal character tools here which was really great and it's valuable tips on developing authentic secondary characters and how those characters should really be structured to really facilitate certain things that you need to happen in your novel in your story and how you know when he paired a secondary character to a hero it's because it's very specific because he wants a certain a certain set of skills that the hero doesn't have or qualities that the hero doesn't have so they can really be complimentary and the great thing is again I mean he's tying it back to stories angels and demons and in lesson six you know he'll always try to also accomplish story with the fewest amount of people possible characters possible and that's I think a good take away from here and he think he talks about not challenging your readers to try to remember what which character is which right he tries to populate a world with characters of opposing opinions so they're very clear that delineated it's clear in the in the readers head and they all serve a purpose to kind of make those arguments in that grey that gray area that he talks about there's not a clear-cut you know you're right you're wrong and that's what makes it interesting and you talks about a partnership when you're writing about how you're creating a partnership with the reader and you don't necessarily need to give them everything you just need to give them the tools to create the story in their head and how you know a million different readers will create a million different stories so really interesting there in less than seven he will give you a specific case study which I really loved from The DaVinci Code it's a character case study any any bracele will break down you know detailed characters case study from The DaVinci Code there and and he this again he accentuates you know each of them had a distinct purpose as to why he created them they weren't just haphazard like okay like I'm gonna I'm gonna make this secondary character but they were there for a reason and then he talks about how you you know you you put some of these tools together and you can use them to then in putting some crazier ideas that he had and and with these characters and then have some fun with it so the writing exercise in this in this lesson with us it was pretty cool he's he wanted you to it's really simple and I think you're in the middle writing a book or or a line a book it's really really would be useful write down every character in your book and then just basically write down the purpose they serve and and it's a great way to just get to the heart of why that character exists and I think as a writer anyone that would do that may find characters that might be superfluous or maybe you don't need them or maybe you can combine characters he talks a lot about that so good good lesson there lesson eight nine or about research and he talks about how he goes about doing his research and how the research he does allows him to tell both sides of the gray area arguments and giving color and depth to this to the story he explains how everything in his book comes from the research and the knowledge you came from that research so again not writing what you know but writing what you want to know and how those interesting facets as a writer as you're tying you're making connections he talks about how you know there's there's work that has to be done you can't just research two concepts but if you do enough research and you're prepared you can find insights and can make connections together that make the thriller interesting he also talks about if you're going on location the importance of just absorb absorbing what you wait you're there when you're there as much as you can right before you start taking notes and pictures but just kind of taking it all in so you can get a real concept and and how that will help you know in writing your story because you may have you know know that something is a certain amount of steps from the door and you've already done it and then just how that type of stuff adds realism he keeps going with research obviously prepare his books and for thrillers research is a big part of it and it's kind of blurring the lines of what's true what's not that's what brings that realism in there right let's see here what else did we put there he warns it got he warns here about guarding against too much research and which I thought was pretty good because he spent the last two lessons there talking about how you want to do the right amount of research but you don't want to turn it to procrastination right and at a certain point you just have to you know keep going move along and actually be writer building a story from the ground up was a great lesson I mean this was where he essentially takes an example were world on the fly you know or I don't know how much the fight was because it is recorded right but winemaking a winemakers world and he uses all these concepts about building you know figuring out the world what's the moral question all the things he talked about coming up with the hero come with the villain in extraordinary circumstances the ticking clock the stakes right the three three C's clock crucible contract and he does that all in this winemaker world and you know what I found intriguing about it was initially when he said winemaking I was like oh not all that great right for I wasn't all that intrigued at first about a thriller sent around a winemakers world however when you put the lessons that he talks about together and he shows you just on the fly you know not even fully fleshed out doing those lessons you really started to see the makings of a thriller which I guess is obviously the entire point but it really made you sit and think wow anything could if crafted the right way can build suspense and become become a thriller he talks about the usefulness in here of using parallel plot points to build suspense when you know when you get stuck sometimes users way to move the plot along and move the character of different locations he gives a lot of great tips in here he talks about how the punishment for a villain needs to fit the crime right you can't be over exaggerated to what the the villain actually did because then the hero will become the villain right and so making sure that the punishment fits the crime really good simple lesson stuff that sounds intuitive once I heard it but it was actually I could see being very very useful in writing a thriller let's go here we shall see talks more about creating suspense and this is another two-part lesson and here it's great he just gives you a bunch of tools in your toolbox of how you can create suspense which sometimes as a writer you realize that it's the same mechanisms that you read and write over and over again it's just about doing how you do it right in that particular novel but this was great cuz it gave you a list of you know using a hidden identity how you know saying how the characters feeling putting in secret backstory looks at how it uses small stories cumulatively in origin then he wrote setting up opening with as many product promises as possible for the for the reader um so you know he shares a one-page prologue here that of a book he wrote that he that he started to write but they never finished which was really really cool right the prologue and it was sounded like pretty interesting but it was a pretty cool like behind-the-scenes look that shows you all these concepts uh he also gives you a ticking clock exercise for any story to add suspense and you know it gives you an idea just compress the timeline to create suspense and talks about how he tries to write books that are really you know one or two days he makes a joke about it but I think he was pretty serious about how maybe one day he'll learn to write a novel that's this pencil over the course of a year and he gives writers that do that um a lot of credit but if you really want to create suspense you can always just shorten the timeline to make that ticking the ticking clock and then you know chapter twelve a lot of other great same thing right create suspense through withholding knowing where to cut your scenes and chapters to make suspense withhold to make them turn the page write these two let's the lessons are really great if you're just looking at how to ratchet up into suspense and you're in your writing so chapter thirteen he gives you moving from an outline to chapters right in which you think about okay I got this great outline but how do I actually move the chapters really simple create a one bullet point and just put what the chapters trying to accomplish in order to start your chapter outline which is which was really good and simple to understand and then he talks about just relaxing and describe what you want to describe and have dialogue he gives you examples from The DaVinci Code the and he talks a great little thing here when I put note down about the parallels that he tells between us between storytelling in music and in writing which I thought was really really fascinating because he had a music background and how he understood how music was crafted and how was same thing the payoff was important to music as it wasn't writing that was a really great tidbit from this lesson and how varying the tone in music is just important as it is in writing and how the lower tones right we'll make the louder tone stand out and the same thing goes for your story how to make your readers care about your characters right lesson 14 he talks about the importance of selecting point of view and how that will help you build suspense your point of view should be very very carefully chosen and you know there one scene he gives an example of one scene that they wrote three times because he realized every time he wrote it when he went back further in a story he couldn't do that because by writing the previous scene and someone else's point of view they would have known the information that then he wanted to put the the reader on the hook for as a possibility and that wasn't fair so just the importance of selecting point of view and what it allows you to do as an author by what you're revealing what you don't really really fascinating really interesting right because point of view is not always the most fascinating thing to toe to read about I don't think so yeah at that point then he made about three points from origin writing that scene three three different ways was really great he talks about exposition and dialogue and how your exposition he talks about gives a great Hemingway quote about you know the year your reader should only be confused when you're trying to mystify them on purpose but not because of incompetence on the part of the writer and how important that is with your exposition and making sure you keep things clear right which was really I mean obviously we all know that but he talks about using flashbacks is a great tool which also really really good points in there and just simply just make sure you're delineating the end of flashbacks make it as clear as you can for your for your readers not to be confused in the editing and rewriting write a lot edit more right which is something that a lot of writing teachers will tell you but he's he's in there heeey this is was great talks about editing from your perspective of your reader not the writer which is so true create a system for tracking says if you edit try doing a 180 on the payoffs and see if that you know helps actually enhance the book getting feedback at the right time for the right people right so that's a great lesson protecting the process okay limit distractions you know basically he talks about things here that how to respect yourself as a writers the way I really took it right have hours give crazy ideas a chance you know be tough on the process but but gentle on the output he just talks about how you can really set yourself up for success there talks about his his life as a writer and you know what the life of writers like and I need to invest in yourself and chapter eighteen build a team that believes in you especially for for getting started how to write a great query letter which depends if you guess if you're gonna be self-published to try to go traditional route and then here he talks about the secret of secrets right and in chapter 19 which I won't give anything away there so overall that is a look at each of these lessons that you can you can see that we talked about the nineteen lessons here is the eighty-nine page you can see it's high-quality workbook that goes with it we would suggest going through the class that you read each of the workbook pages if you have time then watch the video then go back and do the exercise that's we found the most useful by reading it at a time it sets you up to know kind of what you were looking for in the video then you heard it it really made it stick out and then you come back and do the video and you're ready to understand the concepts I'm sorry the the writing exercise you're really ready to go ahead and do so that's how we would suggest you doing the class overall how did we grade dan brown's master class well quality videos guys a credibility instructor like most master class classes but it's definitely for your thrilly writer I mean Dan Brown wildly successful his books were made into movies he was announces one of the most influential people renewing it interest in Leonardo da Vinci I mean his books really went global right you know the site easy-to-use B+ right it's pretty easy quality disappointing documents really strong actionable the lessons the exercises for us made them in a community forum B+ I mean it's not the most active forum but there's definitely some good quality content in there the price for the value conversation versus the value proposition for us the single class if you're interested in here a $90 it's definitely an a right I mean but about four hours of video content Oh nineteen lessons how much is Dan Brown's time actually valued at and if you're serious thrill it writer I couldn't imagine that you wouldn't at least pick out you know one or two pearls from this class from someone who's really done it even even if it's just accentuating something that you're already doing and saying giving you that confidence that you're doing the right thing can sometimes be worth it for a writer writer can be a lonely world so you know think the eight the the $90 price and we will put an affiliate link below if you choose to use our link all-access pass the only thing I would say if you're if you're someone who may jump in multiple genres or someone that just wants to really learn from a lot of people from writing for writing
