This award-winning portrait of lesbian life in the 1940s, 50s and 60s incorporates interviews, archival footage and a pulp novel dramatization to illustrate this incredible time. With humor and grace, ten charming and fascinating women discuss what it was like being lesbians at a very different time in history. Their candid and riveting stories bring to life what it was like coming out (or being closeted) and finding community amidst the homophobic backdrop of the era. Interwoven with this real-life history is the aching romantic, pulp-novel inspired tale of star-crossed lovers Mitch and Laura. The film also features an interview with the acclaimed 1950s lesbian pulp author Ann Bannon (Beebo Brinker, Odd Girl Out).

Forbidden Love: The Unashamed Stories of Lesbian Lives was recipient of the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Documentary in 1994 as well as being honored with the Best Feature Documentary Genie Award (Canada’s equivalent of the Oscars). From acclaimed filmmakers Lynne Fernie and Aerlyn Weissman, this 20th Anniversary re-release has been lovingly remastered in HD by the National Film Board of Canada.

my first real relationship was when I was twenty two which would be 1946 and I met her through a friend who worked the same off as I did and it was just dynamite I was like being run over by a 10-ton truck we used to go to movies and neck and hold hands we read each other love letter every night and we meet in restaurants and we'd be you know staring into each other's eyes I mean why would we hide it you know we felt we couldn't have anyway I don't think it's too strong we used to rent a booth at Heinz once it was 25 cents an hour and she would play the piano so we'd get a bottle of rye and we'd hit over the heintzman and have music and drinks and uh we enjoyed that we had a wonderful relationship for about a year but she had to leave to go to college in the States because she couldn't get into U of T and she wanted to study medicine so she left and that was when I really sort of came apart and in those days there was no one to talk to no one to tell it to because it was such a no-no
